Such is life when NEWS4NAIJA visited a National Identity Management Commission(NIMC) center for NIN registration in iseyin, oke-ogun area of Oyo state.
Nothing can ever expunge the memories of pains and grief faced by some NIN applicants in their attempts to obtain the National Identification Number (NIN) as mandated by the federal government. Not even the extension of the deadline from February would.
The inability of the commission and the federal government to partner, sit, consult, experiment and analyse what it takes for an individual to obtain NIN across the country and align it with the deadline time given foisted untold grief on hundreds of applicants at iseyin. It was a tale of woe. Simply put, the countenances of some of the candidates who spoke with NEWS4NAIJA were more of sorrow than happiness.
It has been confirmed that applicants desperate to have their names registered by the NIMC in iseyin, oyo state are now sleeping the center for the National Identity Number(NIN) enrollment.
This comes after the federal government gave a deadline for linking of NIN and SIM cards. The federal government had extended the deadline following widespread opposition and public outcry against the earlier announcement.
Citizens however, who do not want to be disconnected from using their lines and mobile phones are now leaving their house to sleep overnight at NIN Registration center as a result of insufficient facilities
It would be recall that this same problem occured when the leadership of JAMB on September 2019, called on all prospective candidates for its 2020 UTME to acquire the National Identification Number (NIN), many said it was not realistic, considering the timing.
A visit to the registration center by our correspondent shows that the registration was not seamless. It was characterised by chaos, difficulties, disorderliness, extortion, abuse, hardship, inconvenience, and time wasting, among other untoward occurrences.
NEWS4NAIJA confirmed that in the last three 2-3 weeks majority of the Nigeria youths in oyo spent their whole time at NIMC, some slept overnight at the centres. While some ended up achieving their purpose rightfully or not, others were further frustrated.
The response from the board, further heated the polity, as tension rose above bar for the applicants. However, the ordeal did end on the physical and emotional stress citizens were subjected to, it became a meal ticket for some of the NIMC officials, who allegedly cashed in on the situation.
When NEWS4NAIJA visited a NIMC office in iseyin,oke-ogun area of oyo state, the applicants decried the chaotic condition the NIN registration process has exposed them to, wondering why they would have to go through such torment, just to get a NIN link to SIM cards.
A student seeking to obtain NIN at iseyin center told NEWS4NAIJA that, “I have to get to the NIN registration centre by 4:00a.m just because I need to get my NIN. I have to go that early after my previous attempts failed. We were told that NIN registration is free, but to my greatest surprise, we were told that students fee has been reduced to #200 while others pay more”. he said
Affirming the above claims, another applicant said: “This NIN is giving me a lot of stress and the NIMC workers are making things more difficult. Some people actually slept here so as to get accredited early, yet they were not successful. For someone like me, my mom have to leave her work just to ensure that I get registered, yet we have not been attended to.
Another applicant also said, ”they are still working with yesterday’s list, but I know it’s all lies if you know any of the NIMC staff, you will be attended to.”
Some applicants described the process of the registration as unorganised, hectic, frustrating and uncalled for.
At the center, applicants alleged that majority of the NIMC staff were rude, wicked as they collect bribe and attend swiftly to only connected persons, neglecting and felling unconcerned about others who do not have such connection.
My personal experience following reports I gathered from many applicants at the registration center , who alleged corrupt practices, I decided to disguise as one of those seeking to bribe the officials for the NIN registration at iseyin, oke-ogun area of oyo state on wednesday night and my personal experience showed the corruption in the system.
While me and other enrollees keep the hope alive that the gateman might later open the door for us to do the registration. Suddenly, one amotekun offical came down from their bus and brought out three girls and call upon the gateman to open the gate, without wasting much time, these three girls enter the office to do the registration despite many others waited since morning without being attended to.
The funniest part of the story is that the amotekun man who also had an opportunity to add 2 more people to the 3 girls that have entered told one man beside me to buy him alcohol and also get drinks for the NIMC to get his registration done.
The man however could not reject the offer as he was very desperate to get the NIN.
NEWS4NAIJA gathered that some candidates slept at the iseyin centre for days and still were not able to get their registration done. Some visited the centre consistently for almost a month and still were not able to get registered.
The centre witnessed heavy crowd on daily basis, applicants were not only frustrated but were also shocked that the officials at the centre are making monetary demands. NEWS4NAIJA gathered that students pay #200 as for now while others pay more.
Noting that it is important for every citizen to have NIN, some stakeholders have said making it mandatory for citizens to link it with thier SIM cards with a very short notice, considering the process and procedure for registration was illogical.
NEWS4NAIJA as the time of filling this report could not reached the NIMC officials at iseyin to hear from them. It was gathered that the officials have begin a strike over poor funding and government failure to provide adequate facilities at registration centers.
